Clarifying Core Confusion
This will clear up some of the confusion regarding Intel’s CPUs or processors. The naming conventions are similar and requires some attention to the detail. Lets be clear on “Core Duo” and “Core 2 Duo” and “dual core” and “Pentium D” processors.
Core Duo
The Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit CPU. It has a 32 bit instruction set. Core Duo processors are not officially called “dual core” processors. Core Duo processors do not have 64 bit instructions sets and cannot run 64 bit operating systems. That being said, Core Duo cannot run 64 bit games or applications. “Core Duo” is an official Intel brand name.
Core 2 Duo
Core 2 Duo are 64-bit CPUs. They have 64-bit instruction sets. They are backward compatable with 32-bit operating systems, games and applications. The Core 2 Duo CPUs are not officially referred to as “dual core” CPUs. “Core 2 Duo” is an official Intel brand name.
Pentium D
The “Intel Pentium D Processor” is an official name. All the Pentium D Processors are dual core CPUs. All are desktop CPUs. All Pentium D Processors are 64-bit. Now get ready for this interesting tidbit. All Intel dual core CPUs are not Pentium D Processors. They are not officially branded as Pentium D Processors. The following is a list of Intel officially named Pentium D Processors:
- 805
- 820
- 830
- 840
- 915
- 920
- 930
- 935
- 940
- 945
- 950
- 960
Extreme Edition
There is still more core to consider. The “Pentium Processor Extreme Edition” is an Intel brand name. They are not officially called Pentium D. However, when you look at the Intel listing, you could say they are Pentium D Processors on roids. There are only three of them. These are an overclocker’s dream. They are as follows:
- Extreme Edition 965
- Extreme Edition 955
- Extreme Edition 840
They are all dual core, 64 bit processors for the desktop. Right now you could get great pricing on them. But look out for the EE 965 can still be pricey despite its age.
Dual Core Pentium
Now we come to the category where the CPUs are called Pentium. But they are dual core 64-bit processors. They are all E-series desktop processors. They are as follows:
- E2140
- E2160
- E2180
- E2200
- E5200
- E5300
- E5400
- E6300
- E6500
These processors are priced just right, in the $100.00 and less range. Dont think they are outdated. The Pentium Processor E6500 was just recently launced. This one doesn’t even have a 64-bit instruction set. The E6500 doesn’t need it. Why? Because it has Intel 64. It is a little different from the others in this category. It also sports a 45nm process, which is indicative of its edginess. However, it is still in the low C-note range price-wise.
Summary
This is not exhaustive. There are still Centrino Duo and and other “dual core” mobile processors. Well hit on them in the laptop section.
Centrino Vs. Core 2 Duo
Intel’s Centrino and the Core 2 Duo processors are great in their own way. Developed exclusively for the mobile market, Centrino continues to stay ahead of the pack. Both of these CPUs have 2 cores on one physical package. However, there is confusion about Centrino’s differences and common points.
What differences exits? What are the similarities? Here are some stats to help the reader better understand the technology being described.
Centrino
Centrino technology enables processors to have the best efficiency and the best battery life. So far it is the best technology to accomplish that. The Centrino technology is a collection of performance and power management technologies.
The Centrino processors follow a naming convention similar of Core 2 Duos. There is the Centrino processor, single core, optimized for the mobile market. Then there are the Centrino Duo that has two cores and still 32 bit. Finally Centrino Pro and Centrino vPro which are specifically Mobile Enterprise. The Centrino Pro and vPro incorporates Core 2 Duo technology and have 64 bit instruction sets.
Core 2 Duo
This is the best selling chip right now. There are several dozen Core 2 Duo processors for laptops. These processors are not specifically mobile CPUs. Nevertheless, Core 2 Duo now has dominance in the mobile market.
The Core 2 Duo is available to a wider segment of machines needing processors. Processor speed for mobile chips ranges up to 3.06 GHz. The 2 Duo processors for the desktop have frequencies as high as 3.33 GHz.
Differences
When it comes to mobile processing, Centrino technology has a decided edge. Centrino technology was developed specifically for mobile applications. So the Centrino group are on the path of best practices to that goal. Which is why the newest Centrino’s have incorporated Core 2 Duo technologies.
The Core 2 Duo CPUs have not, as of yet, incorporated all that Centrino has to offer. The newest Centrino has Next-Gen Wireless-N. That is a wireless technology with up to 5 x faster performance and 2 x WiFi range. Additionally, Centrino specific technologies are being ported to Core 2 Duo processors.
Shared Strengths
The Centrino 2 actually incorporates Core 2 Duo as a component. There are both 64-bit Centrino and Core 2 Duo processors. The Core 2 Duo uses technologies that originated with Centrino. These technologies are now used on the desktop and mobile.
Conclusions
When you peep under the hood of the Centrino you’ll find some engineering that Core 2 Duo don’t have. The Centrino processor is quickly becoming the standard for mobile enterprise computing. But Core 2 Duo is not left in the dust. They ascend to the present level and beyond only with a concerted effort. The latest Centrino CPU has Core 2 Duo as a component.

Core 2 Duo vs Turion 64
The Core 2 Duo is different from the “Core Duo” and Pentium Dual. AMD’s single-core Turion 64 is different from Turion 64 X2. The Intel Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit system, whereas the Intel “Core Duo” is a 32-bit system. We are only going to talk about the AMD Mobile Turion 64 single-core and Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors. This article can help in deciding on one of these processors.
AMD Turion 64
The AMD Mobile Turion 64 is a single-core 64-bit processor. This processor can run 32– and 64-bit operating systems. There are several single-core Turion 64s in this category. They range from a CPU speed of 1 GHz to 2.4 GHz.
The Turion 64 ML and MT are compatible with a Socket 754-type CPU socket, whereas the Turions designated with “MK” are compatible with a Socket S1. The Turion 64-MK has the best performance of the family.
2 Duo Processor
Intel Core 2 Duo processor is 64-bit technology. It is a two-core processor and can run both 32– and 64-bit operating systems.
Intel offers at least 57 types of 2 Duo processors for laptops. Their speed ranges from 1.06 GHz to 3.06 GHz. The L2 caches of these processors are listed as 2, 3, 4 and 6 MB. The frequency of the front side bus is from 533 to 1,066 MHz.
2 Duo consumption
Performance for mobile chips is reduced as much as 25 percent from desktop chips.
The alpha notation of wattage and thus power conservation is:
The highest current consumption: X (extreme).
Desktop processors over 55 watts: E
Regular laptop CPU 30–39 Watt : T
Laptops up to 25 watts: P
Low voltage CPU, 12–19 watts: L
Ultra-low voltage, less than 19 watts: U
Power Consumption of Turion
Turion’s power consumption is indicated by its thermal dissipation rating. The ML has a TDP of 35 watts.
The Turion-MT has less performance but better power conservation. It’s TDP is 25 watts.
PowerNow! enables the ML processor’s operating frequency to scale down. The hottest Turion can cook at 2.4 GHz and cool down to 800 MHz. Of course, this is dependent on CPU load. The voltage scales accordingly.
Desktops
There are Core 2 Duo processors for desktop computers. They range from 800 MHz to 1333 MHZ FSB. The L2 cache sizes were 2, 3, 4 and 6 MB. The sockets were PLGA775, but the most up to date offerings are LGA775. The processor frequency was 1.80 GHz on the low end and went as high as 3.33 GHz.
AMD primarily intended Turion 64 for laptops. Reportedly, there are some ways to kluge a mainboard with 754 socket to perform with a Turion 64 on the desktop.
Summary
Both of these processors will enable you to take advantage of a 64-bit operating system. There are more 64-bit games and applications becoming available. These games and apps require 64-bit processors and operating systems.
An AMD Turion 64 processor is a good option for a laptop. Additionally, the 2 Duo processors are for laptops and desktops.
